At its core, the TITAN strapping solution, for which a patent application has been filed, consists of two coordinated industrial robots. The first, acting as a strapper, carries the strapping head for tensioning and sealing the strap. It can be fitted with an interchangeable head system that handles different strap materials and widths fully automatically. The second robot, acting as a gripper, ensures precise strap guide around the coil. To this end, both robots operate in synchronisation based on laser measurement at the hold-down device, which automatically detects the position, diameter, width and eye diameter of each coil.

At the heart of TITAN’s robotic strapping system at the turnstile lies the interplay between process, robotics, coil positioning, automated strap guide and integration into the packaging process. Developed entirely in-house by TITAN’s highly skilled engineering team.

Automatic tape threading

With the TITAN robotic strapping system, strap feeding at the turnstile is also fully automatic. The operator no longer needs to guide the strap manually through the entire strapping area, but simply feeds it into the strapping head at a defined point. The plant then takes over, guiding the strap through the guide and into the strapping process. This represents a significant improvement in workplace safety.

TITAN Innovation: automated Robot eye strapping

Around 60 % of all coils in a traditional steel service centre are transported in an upright position following the packaging process. That is why we have developed a unique solution in which, even before reaching the packaging line, the coils – whilst suspended directly from the mandrel unloader – are strapped through the eye by a robot as many times as you require. They are then transported in an upright position to a designated staging point. The major advantage is that the coils are no longer transported along the entire packaging line, as is usually the case. Our outstanding solution completely eliminates this process step for you. At the same time, it increases the available capacity for coils that need to be strapped whilst lying flat.

TITAN Innovation: Fully automatic skid strapping

Here, at the end of the packaging line, a robot straps entire stacks of coils onto a pallet or onto wooden runners for onward transport. The particular advantage is that the strap channels are integrated directly into the roller conveyor. This eliminates the need for a turntable and its foundation, saving easily a few tens of thousands of euros. At the same time, it makes the station mobile should the entire system require further development. With an optional interchangeable head system, you can easily integrate additional process steps such as applying labels or outer packaging. There are no limits to what you can achieve.

Pick & Place for wooden runners or interlayers

Where there is a shortage of skilled workers, our robotic solution also handles the perfectly positioned insertion of wooden runners and protective interlayers. Fully integrated into the packaging line, it is flexible in the face of changing requirements and operates 24/7 without interruption, whenever you need it. On request, this can also be done with pre-cut wood, which is cut to the specified lengths on site.

Robotic solution for labelling and marking with a marking unit

To fully automate your packaging line, automatically generated labels, tags, RFID codes or signatures can also be applied by a robot. Flexible, quick to change and fully integrated into your digitalised process.

Integration: simply by giving the start signal

Because we have designed the TITAN robotic strapping system at the turnstile as a self-contained solution, it simply requires a start signal from the higher-level control system – with absolutely no need to interfere with existing PLC systems or modify the existing control technology. And the installation has virtually no impact on ongoing operations: we set up the robot station over one weekend, connect it over a second weekend and commission it over the third weekend. TITAN – up and running!
