TITAN has embarked on a project for a leading German conglomerate that is the first of its kind. The result: our solution drastically reduces the risk of injury and maximises efficiency during de-strapping. At the same time, this solution offers a response to the skills shortage of the future.

Gone are the days when PET straps had to be removed by hand. With our fully automatic de-strapper, it’s now much easier. Snap, crackle, pop! Our client is a leading technology company based in Germany. With a focus on industry, mobility, infrastructure and automation, the group supports its clients in transforming key industries: manufacturing processes, transport networks, and building and energy systems.
TITAN develops a fully automated solution
On behalf of a Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, a German conglomerate specialising in automation approached TITAN. Why? For the battery assembly required to equip hybrid lorries in Sweden, the manufacturer needed technology for the automated de-strapping of the Scandinavian battery cell packaging. The crux of the matter: at that time, TITAN only offered such a solution for steel straps, but not for the plastic straps used by the Swedish manufacturer. Our task: to develop a fully automated solution for removing PET straps. This solution needed to be capable of removing up to four PET straps per box in order to speed up the work, ensure employee safety and, at the same time, counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
With the help of TITAN Robotics, it is possible to remove plastic straps at high speed. Two straps can be removed from each container in just 40 seconds. This enables our customer to boost efficiency whilst minimising safety risks for their staff.

Development of the first de-strapper for PET straps
Through TITAN Engineering – including our development and robotics department – TITAN has dedicated itself to developing the industry’s first de-strapper for PET straps. This consists of a robotic arm with an integrated tool, which first locates the relevant straps on the containers and then automatically and precisely manoeuvres the cutting tool under the taut strap to sever it. This was also where the major challenge lay: as the straps are under enormous tension and lie tightly against the package, the primary task was to guide the tool safely under the strap. To ensure that the tension in the strap does not release and cause it to snap when cut, it is first secured by the robot. After cutting, the strap is shredded in the final step by the shredder standing next to it. To ensure that our technology enables other companies to achieve fully automatic de-strapping in the future, we have filed a patent application for the TITAN product.
Fully automatic and innovative
When removing straps of any kind manually, the tension forces released are often underestimated. If used incorrectly, this can result in injuries that may be serious for employees. With the patented fully automatic de-strapper, TITAN has developed an efficient solution for the safe cutting of PET-strap. With this innovation, we are the first company to not only specialise in strapping but also to include the de-strapping of plastic straps in our portfolio. The entire de-strapping process – locating, prying open, securing, releasing and shredding – takes a maximum of 40 seconds for two straps. And the shredded strap remnants are returned to the recycling cycle – sorted by type.
