Steel coil strapping

Blisteringly hot, fixed with millimetre precision

TITAN performs coil strapping at 900 °C for a major international steel and technology group based in Austria.

The air shimmers, steel coils glow. In this hottest phase of the production process, there is no room for compromise. Only strapping makes the 900 °C mass manageable and ensures it can be transported further.

900 °C leaves no room for error.

That is how hot the steel is when it is wound into coils after hot rolling. That is why our customer in Austria – a world-leading supplier of tool steel and special profiles and a close partner of the European automotive industry – relies precisely on TITAN’s expertise and experience in this area. And TITAN delivers: with machines and strapping heads that can withstand these extreme temperatures over the long term. And steel strapping bands whose elongation accommodates the shrinkage of the coil diameter during cooling, thus holding them together securely for transport. 

A second critical issue is the very short cycle times our customer must work with during strapping – coil in, coil out. Because the steel, whilst still hot, is thermally highly active and the coil is correspondingly unstable. The aim here is to secure the coil as quickly and safely as possible, to prevent the dangerous unravelling of the coiling process as swiftly and reliably as possible. TITAN strapping machines achieve this seamlessly. Thus, the quality of the strapping solution determines process reliability, plant availability and, ultimately, the quality of the end product.

Technology that can withstand the heat

TITAN supplies strapping heads that have been specifically developed for these extreme conditions. The TITAN steel strapping is secured around the customer’s red-hot coils using the TITANARG® welding process, ensuring maximum tension and the highest level of closure reliability. Precise, robust and temperature-resistant to well over 900 °C. The TITAN strapping heads used are precisely tailored to these extreme conditions. A sophisticated, integrated TITAN solution – technically well thought-out, economically viable and proven over many years.

German-Austrian circular economy

An interesting side note: a steelwork in Linz uses the hot-strapped steel coils to produce raw material for our production facility in Iserlohn-Letmathe through a further process (cold rolling). Here, we use this material to produce the steel strap, which is then shipped back to Austria to secure Voest’s products during transport. Once these straps have served their purpose, they are returned to the economic cycle. You can’t get much closer to a circular economy in practice than this.
